Vision motivates movement. Our physiotherapists use strategies to support you to learn to move safely and independently. They’ll work with you to develop functional movement skills, such as how to get around safely and independently, your general physical abilities and strength.
Our physiotherapists are skilled in adapting movement-based activities for adults with a vision impairment to improve their physical skills.
For adults, we can help:
- Improve strength and balance
- Develop coordination and fitness for recreation and sport.
- Use equipment to support independent movement, such as a walker.
- Manage musculoskeletal complications related to vision impairment, such as poor posture from reading too close to a screen or book.
Hydrotherapy
We can also combine traditional land-based physiotherapy with sessions in water! Hydrotherapy uses the properties of water to support a person to complete movement, exercises and play. The warmth, buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure contribute to muscle relaxation, support the body to practice balance skills and provide resistance for muscle strengthening. It is beneficial for people with muscle weakness, coordination difficulties, high tone or pain. Water based therapy is fun and can improve your confidence in completing movement-based tasks that you might find challenging on land.
Hydrotherapy helps to relax tight muscles, particularly as it is usually done in a warm pool.
VisAbility’s physiotherapists are registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (link opens in new window).
